Kata (i.e. choreography) is necessary to teach correct technique. The "usefulness" depends on how well the student understands its application.
Also, a black belt is largely misinterpreted in western culture. It basically means one is an advanced beginner...not a master. A genuine understanding of any martial art doesn't really begin until 4th degree black belt (yondan).
Also, Aikido is different than Real Aikido (the group in Serbia). If you have access to it, try Daito Ryu Aikijutsu. - IshiYamaRyuSeattle

when you go somewhere to take classes how do you know if the people are gonna teach you useful aikido and just the coreographed shit!!! thats one thing i hate about martial arts is all pre-set moves!!! for example i got in a fight with a black belt in twa kon do he could throw a nice punch but thats it i pretty much dominated him in that fight!!! anyways love your video help me out im my decision!!! - gifts216

How many highly trained martial artists go around starting fights? Most have more discipline and have nothing to prove. It's the drunken wannabee tough guys that usually start shit and they quickly learn that Aikido can be very painful when you're on the receiving end of it and it's unexpected. - muskysnax
